Do any of those politicians who keep mouthing the phrase "God bless America" realise what would happen if God broke the habit of a lifetime and actually responded to a plea?
Assuming He's the god of love, peace and warm fuzzy feelings, the streets of various financial districts will soon be littered with corpses as many CEO's realise that they can no longer be guaranteed multi-million kickbacks from multi-billion dollar contracts to rebuild demolished countries after they've sold the armed forces the means to blow those countries to smithereens.
Cheap weapons would flood the army surplus market, quickly snapped up by an unholy alliance of Christian Armies For God, led by Jack Chick and Pat Robertson, who still believe that the best evangelical tools are M16's and precision guided missives. Plans are quickly drawn up to send a heavily armed force of missionaries to bring God's blessing to the non-Christian world. Seems that some won't accept the truth even if it's introduced in the form of a divinely-glowing suppository.
In retaliation, many fundamentalist Islamic countries issue declarations of Jihad and sieze the Weapons of Mass Destruction that the Bush Administration has been quitely shipping into Iraq so that they can "discover" them in October, and several of the missing Soviet suitcase nukes are found in FedEx depots across the nation.
Thousands of people will be thrown out of work as the weapons factories change over from making swords to ploughshares and the trickle down effect will adversely affect millions of other jobs. The recession will be further exacerbated as the instant curing of all illnesses forces HBO's, insurance companies and hospitals out of business.
The banking industry collapses as the Lord pays off everybody's bills, debts and mortgages, soup kitchens become the new rock and roll and the only growth industries are Christian book shops and firms selling t-shirts with slogans such as "I told you so!" and "I can't wait for the Final Trumpet"
And what would happen if Truth, Honesty and Decency were suddenly introduced in to religion and politics?
Churches empty as the flocks realise that the deities they worship are false graven images, elevated upon the altars of their own egos: the gods that they found were merely the gods that they sought. Each had made his own god in his own image and was not surprised when that god hated the same things he hated and approved of the things he approved.
Their god wasn't God - merely a rubber-stamp for their prejudices.
There's an upsurge of personal and intellectual honesty as many now understand that their religious ideology was just a way to have their cake and eat it too, and now clearly see the dichotomies and contradictions in the stances they held. They can no longer sustain beliefs such as the existence of the Christian God, a moral code that negates the rights of females to their own bodies by calling their choice murder while supporting capital punishment, bombings, murders and massacres in other countries as necessary to secure their own peace, security, and economic well-being.
Even though the crime rate immediately drops to zero, police stations are inundated with politicians, televangelists, religious leaders of all denominations and various high profile bible thumpers, turning themselves in and admitting to a vast catalogue of crimes ranging through arson, bigamy, bribery, embezzlement, extortion and money laundering, all the way to wire fraud.
The now overburdened Justice system collapses altogether when 60% of the Catholic priesthood demand that they be locked up for child abuse, mental cruelty and intellectual dishonesty.
Remaing largely untouched by God's blessing, Dubya said:
"Because of the invisible part of everything that you thought you could see, you can't see, I now understand that I can't be the chitinous puppet of an incalculably cynical and malevolent cabal and a ruthless neo-Con, bent on creating a plutocratic ruling class at home and a rapacious corporate imperium abroad at the same time. I have to be one or the other, so I've decided to stick with bullying, coercion, and bad faith dealing".
Gay and lesbian associations across America will disband, issuing statements saying that they are not really homosexual, just pretending to be in order to get attention and to annoy their parents. "Henceforth", the statements read, "we will all start looking for nice, Christian partners."
It will be goodbye to the ACLU - who you going to sue when God Himself kicks down the Wall? God does, however, retain their services and instructs them to bring actions against the Catholic Church. Close on two thousand years of misrepresenting His son and obtaining money with menaces has really pissed Him off.
