What Is Wicca?
A Guest Article By Alicorn
Wicca. Such a small word, that can cause so
much controversy. It means so many different things to many
different people. It's as unique and individual as the
practictioner is. I can give you a sterile explanation of what
Wicca is. But I'm sure that you've read the books, saw the
movies, and watched a few documentaries on what society thinks
Wicca is, so I won't. Instead, what I plan to do is give you my
personal feelings of a belief that has filled my heart and life
from the moment I entered this world as a babe. You are free to
agree or disagree with me. After all, no single point of view is
either right or wrong where Wicca is concerned. It is ultimately
up to the individual on what he or she thinks of Wicca and it's
meaning.
As you go through my site, you will be given different links to view, to see other's interpretations of what Wicca means to them, and how it has effected thier daily lives. This is to allow you a fuller view of the meaning and feelings behind the beliefs of Wicca. It will also help you personalize your approach to such an intimate and personal belief to the meaning of life and love. You man even find ways to incorporate Wicca into your daily life, even though you may not embrasse the belief as your own, and follow a different religious path.
You may view Wicca as a group of people who dress in black, worship idols, chant in arcane languages, and dance around a bonfire under the full moon. And in a few cases, you may be right. But you can also find people of any religion wearing black cloth, you will find idols in side any established church you go to, Latin is an acceptable language in the Catholic Church, and very few religions have yet to outlaw outdoor and public dancing and celebrations of religious holidays. The only difference between those beliefs and Wicca is that Wicca has been around much longer. Also, between those beliefs and Wicca is that Wicca has been around much longer. Also, most of our religious holidays are also observed by many other religious beliefs, but they have changed the names of these holidays.
Most of the confusion of what Wicca is about comes from the movie industry. It never ceases to amaze me how many young people come to the different sites looking for spells that they've seen on tv and in the movies. They expect when they get a spell book, that they should immediately be able to cast spells of flying, transportation, and vanquishing monsters and demons. And when they find to thier surprise that none of these special effects happen, they come seeking us out to find where they went wrong. Most of the time, they leave disappointed and angry when we inform them that these things don't happen. No sparks, no super human strength, and no monster fights outside of daily life's ups and downs.
But every once in awhile, some young person actually stops to listen. They throw away thier preconcieved ideas and listen. They actually decide to take time to learn about our beliefs and try to apply it to thier daily lives. We tell them that Wicca is about life, it's connection to each individual, and how a person will grow with insight and learning on a daily basis. They learn Wicca's deeper meaning and that spells are but a small part of it's daily routine. These are our brightest moments and joys in life. When a student and aspiring young Wiccan enters our lives. They are our most prized gifts to the World.
Simply put, to me Wicca means a harmonious joining of mind, soul, and heart with Nature around us. It is incorporating what Nature provides to us and applying it to our daily lives. Wicca is about helping each other. It's not about one's self, but of a bond between mankind and Nature. You can no more control Nature, as you can control another man. You can abuse Nature and your fellow man, but never truly control it. Wicca is about balancing responsibility with compassion of all living things, whenther it be plant, animal, or human.
Many have the idea that Wicca is about helping one's self, and that's not what it is intended for. I'm not saying that you can't use the gifts Nature provides to protect your home and loved ones. What I am saying, it should it should not be used to put yourself above the feelings and rights of others. Wicca can be turned around to cause harm. To believe otherwise would be foolish. But if we all used Wicca to be rich, all powerful, and place one's self above others, than the world would be filled with nothing but selfish, rich tyrants. The common man would cease to exist, and Nature would be destroyed.
Wicca is about using what you are provided with. Your love, compassion, skills, and generosity is used to provide a safe haven for all concerned. If you feel you need protection, you do so with intent to protect not only yourself and loved ones, but cause no harm to those your protecting yourself against. If your doing a money spell, your not asking for unlimited wealth, but asking that your skills be recognized and given what they are worth, without taking the same from others and leaving them without thier due rights to live comfortably. If your doing a healing spell, you not only asking to heal what the physical illness, but to heal the whole being, and all around them.
What I'm trying to say, is that Wicca is about bonding of all living things. A bonding of spirit, heart, and mind with all around you. Of belonging, not separation of yourself with that around you. No single individual is more important than another. We each have a purpose and meaning in life. We are all equally important to the cycle of life, as we are each important to the next person, and them to us. Wicca is about showing each other respect, compassion, and love. A joining of sprits into a great universal enlightenment. Wicca knows no limitations. It does not exsist in Nature a difference of who is more important than the next. Each living creation has a right to enjoy life, be substained by Nature, and be productive and loved. Even those who abuse Nature deserve love and compassion.
